TITLE: A protective ritual

I was attending a mass in Kond, Yerevan’s old historic district, in Armenia, when suddenly the women who had been seated gathered under a cloth that the priest was preparing for them. Much later, I was told that it was a protection rite, rarely practiced but still present in the area.
