TITLE: Edge of Storms

This work uses architectural symbols embedded within Taiwan’s urban landscape to reflect the island’s unresolved historical and geopolitical condition. Traditional mythological creatures, once created to guard sacred boundaries, are repositioned against the silhouette of contemporary statehood and vertical modernity. Through this confrontation of symbols, the image examines how Taiwan continuously negotiates between inherited civilization, political ambiguity, and external pressure.

The photograph approaches the city as a layered semiotic field. Temples, skyscrapers, clouds, and distance no longer function merely as physical objects, but as competing systems of meaning. Within this unstable coexistence, Taiwan appears suspended between visibility and uncertainty — a place shaped simultaneously by memory, defense, belief, and the constant awareness of historical fracture.

Than Win Aung is a Myanmar-born photographer and visual communication design student at National Taiwan University of Arts.
