TITLE: New York City - Street Art, early 1990s

Street Art boomed in some areas of New York City, especially in Lower Manhattan, in the 1980s and the 1990s. In the sequence hereby the author highlighted the expressionism of a number of graffitis in Alphabet City. The black and white brings to the extreme the most acute form of expression, the contrasts, the numerous symbolisms contained within the graffitis. The context of the urban landscape and the sudden unexpected human presence in some of the photos, contribute to emanate an atmosphere of strong surrealism

AUTHOR: Giampaolo Cantini (Italy)

An amateur photographer, now 68, he started photographing in the mid 80s and switched to black and white photography soon afterwards.
While living in New York City in the early 90s, he took a special interest in street art, especially in Alphabet City and other areas of Lower Manhattan.
Giampaolo turned to digital photography a few years ago.
He is currently working on a few main areas: architecture (with a focus on rationalism of the 30s), street art, gardens and “secret corners”.
The common thread of his work is actually the magic and the mystery that springs out of street life, architecture (including gardens architecture) and a host of secret corners around us.
