TITLE: Afghanistan in a new light
In the years following the 2001 U.S. invasion and the overthrow of the Taliban regime, Associated Press photographer Rodrigo Abd spent months working in Afghanistan and learned how to use a traditional Afghan camera, a handmade device that also functions as a darkroom. In 2023, Abd returned with an idea: to use this nearly vanished Afghan art form to document how life has changed in peacetime — for better and for worse — two years after the withdrawal of U.S. troops and the Taliban’s return to power.
