TITLE: Fringe

Philadelphia is a city with a rich and storied past in American circus history. Fringe
explores contemporary circus life, showcasing the very essence of this vibrant art form. Growing
up near Sarasota, the capital for the circus arts, I was fortunate enough to witness firsthand the
spectacle of traveling circuses, filled with children riding majestic elephants and awe-inspiring
performances. I noticed its evolution into an elevated form of artistic entertainment with an array
of acrobatic feats, dazzling choreography, and breathtaking stunts that demand a lifetime of
training and dedication for just a brief moment in the spotlight. A circus artist's life is about the
journey, rather than the destination, a relentless and ongoing quest for mastery that demands the
utmost physical and mental bravery.
Drawing on my own experiences as a dancer in my youth, Fringe captures the raw and
unpolished aspects of the circus artist's daily routine, peeling back the layers to reveal the true
essence of these extraordinary performers. My photographs illustrate the subtle intimate details
that reveal their humanity and dedication. Whether it is sweat-stained clothes, peeling paint, or
discarded debris on the floor, Fringe focuses on the inner workings of this world, where the
magic of the circus is not just a fleeting moment in time but a daily pursuit of excellence.

Alayna Vance is a photographer whose work is rooted in observing the beauty of everyday life and exploring perspectives beyond her own. Her interest in photography began during her freshman year of high school, when she took the initiative to improve her school’s yearbook. After spending a summer self-teaching the fundamentals, she was selected as photo editor, a role that confirmed her desire to pursue photography as a career and led her toward formal education in the field.

Alayna graduated from Drexel University with a Bachelor of Science in Photography and Business Administration, an interdisciplinary education that honed both her creative practice and understanding of the economic aspects of the industry.

Drawing creative inspiration from ordinary moments and human connection, Alayna’s work is influenced by the film, Soul and its emphasis on presence and meaning in the everyday. Her photographic approach often involves documenting subjects and environments outside of her personal lifestyle, allowing her to broaden her perspective while creating thoughtful, empathetic imagery.

Alayna works freelance as a photographer, photographer’s assistant, and production assistant. Her professional experience has allowed her to collaborate on diverse sets and adapt to fast-paced environments.
