The series 'Shingle. Unintended Geometry' is a visual study of the centuries-old wooden churches in the Opole region of Poland. By stripping these structures of their religious and historical context, the artist treats them as complex, mathematical sculptures. The work explores how hand-crafted, weathered wood creates fluid, rhythmic patterns that resonate with modern abstract aesthetics. Through high-contrast black and white photography, the series investigates the interplay of light and shadow on warped surfaces. It is an approach of pure observation — stripping away narrative, nostalgia and historical weight to reveal what remains: geometry, rhythm, and the silent mathematics of time made visible in wood.

Tomasz Bugała is a photographer based in Upper Silesia, Poland — a region shaped by industrial precision and vernacular craft. Working at the intersection of mathematical thinking and organic decay, his lens finds abstract sculpture within the vanishing wooden architecture of rural Poland. His photography has been recognized internationally for its unique perspective, notably winning first prize in the architectural photography competition organized by the Museum of the Opole Village, and being named a Nominee at the Fine Art Photography Awards (FAPA) in 2026.
