TITLE: Blind Symmetry: Beyond Differences

'Blind Symmetry' explores the artificial boundaries we construct between human beings and the possibility of transcending them. This portrait of two children—positioned in mutual vulnerability with their eyes covered—challenges viewers to confront how societal conditioning shapes our perception of difference from our earliest years.
The visual composition deliberately creates balance through contrast: light and dark skin, black and white clothing with opposing ruffled elements, creating a harmonious visual symmetry that undermines the very concept of separation. The children's eyes—our primary means of categorizing others—are covered, suggesting both the blindness of prejudice and the potential freedom that comes from seeing beyond physical attributes.
Their expressions convey a sense of peace and trust despite their mutual blindness, embodying the innocent potential that exists before societal divisions are internalized. The hands covering eyes aren't threatening but gentle—a metaphor for how we might protect each other from divisive perceptions rather than being defined by them.
I chose black and white photography to strip away the distraction of color while paradoxically highlighting the skin tone differences that society has imbued with such significance. This technical choice creates a visual tension that mirrors our cultural contradictions around difference—simultaneously emphasizing and transcending the very distinctions we've been conditioned to prioritize.
The intimate composition invites viewers to witness this moment of vulnerable connection, challenging us to recognize how early our perceptions are shaped and how profound the trust required to move beyond them. By portraying children rather than adults, the image speaks to both the inheritance of our divisions and the possibility of their dissolution.
This work asks us to consider what might be possible if we approached our differences with the same openness and trust these children demonstrate—blindly reaching across boundaries with the faith that our shared humanity matters more than the categories dividing us.
