TITLE: Solidarity within the Muslim community
The photo is a part of a documentary series taken on July 29, 2023. On that day, a significant protest took place in London, where Muslims gathered to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, while expressing their outrage and demanding that European governments take a more serious approach to hate crimes against Muslims. The demonstrators were protesting against the spread of hatred against Muslims and the incident that took place on June 28, 2023, when Salwan Momika, a 37-year-old Iraqi Assyrian refugee, publicly desecrated the Quran in front of a mosque in Stockholm. Protesters from across the UK gathered to express their concerns, highlighting the need for greater attention to issues of religious tolerance and social justice. Such marches take place every year during Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, when Shiite Muslims mourn the tragedy of Karbala and reaffirm their commitment to the principles of justice and tolerance. These marches are a moving reminder of historic sacrifices and provide a platform for collective action and solidarity within the Muslim community.
