TITLE: Threshold: Between Worlds
'Threshold' explores the liminal spaces we inhabit during moments of profound transition. This image captures the ethereal boundary between states of being—the invisible thresholds we cross in life's pivotal moments that forever alter our perception of reality.
The deliberate use of flowing white fabric creates both opacity and transparency, mirroring how we experience transitions: partially aware of what we're leaving behind, yet unable to fully perceive what lies ahead. The suspended figure exists in a visual purgatory—neither fully present in one realm nor another—embodying the uncertainty of transformation.
I chose to work with long exposure and subtle motion to create the vertical luminescence that seems to pull the figure between worlds. This technical approach manifests the sensation of being simultaneously drawn toward something while releasing something else—that peculiar weightlessness and disorientation we feel when crossing life's most significant thresholds.
The high contrast between light and shadow emphasizes the duality inherent in transition moments: the interplay between knowing and unknowing, between holding on and letting go. The dark negative space surrounding the figure represents the vast unknown that both threatens and beckons us during profound change.
The partially visible human form beneath the veil—just a glimpse of an arm—maintains a connection to humanity while suggesting transcendence beyond physical limitations. This delicate balance speaks to our experience of being simultaneously embodied and yet connected to something beyond our material existence.
In our lives, we repeatedly cross invisible thresholds—birth, love, loss, death—moments when we are suspended between what was and what will be. This image seeks to materialize that ineffable space of in-betweenness, a visual poem about the beauty and terror of transformation. It invites viewers to recognize and honor these passages, to acknowledge the profound disorientation of transition while embracing its potential for revelation.
