My hometown in Tampere, Finland has public saunas and lakeside baths, a ritual deeply rooted in our culture. Here’s how it works: First, you sit in the sauna, enveloped in excruciating heat. Then, you plunge into the freezing water. As you step out and walk back to the warmth, you don’t feel cold—you just feel. Like never before. And that’s why we do it, again and again.
