TITLE: Amboseli Giants
In this series I have focused on the bull elephants of Amboseli such as Pascal, Vronsky, Teejay, Pamma & Liaqat, that often play a critical ecological and social role as they enter their prime. Typically between the ages of 25 and 45, these males reach peak physical condition, their size, strength, and dominance marking them as central figures in both elephant society and the broader landscape.
Prime bulls, especially those in musth—a period of heightened testosterone and aggression—are the primary breeders within elephant populations. Their genetic fitness ensures the health and diversity of future generations, as females selectively mate with the most dominant, robust males. This selective breeding helps maintain the overall vitality and resilience of the elephant herds in Amboseli, which is home to one of Africa’s most well-studied elephant populations.
Beyond reproduction, strong bulls shape elephant behavior and herd dynamics. Though often solitary or in loose bachelor groups, their presence influences the social development of younger males, often known as "askaris" who learn hierarchy, restraint, and survival skills from older, experienced bulls. This mentorship helps curb aggression in adolescent males and reduces conflict within the population.
Yet, bull elephants are increasingly under threat—from poaching, habitat loss, and more recently legalized hunting across the border in Tanzania. As they reach their prime, they become targets for ivory hunters due to their massive tusks. Protecting these bulls is crucial not just for elephant conservation, but for sustaining the intricate balance of the Amboseli ecosystem they help uphold.

After 30 years working in the TV for C4 & National Geographic, I took a leap of faith & decided to follow my passion & become a full-time wildlife photographer.
However, during my time at National Geographic where I led the programming strategy for Nat Geo channels internationally, I was able to soak up all the expertise around me & collaborate with some of the world’s best photographers, explorers & filmmakers. I watched, I listened & I learnt from the best.
I look for an unmistakable sense of place in my photography. In my compositions I am constantly seeking to capture the raw beauty & majesty not only of the wildlife in front of me, but equally important to me is the environment around it.
I am also increasingly looking for those subjects & environments where I know black & white will enhance the final image, as I love its timeless beauty & elegance.
10% of my print sales goes to support various conservation charities in Africa.
