TITLE: This Last of Meeting Places
'This Last of Meeting Places' is set along the coastline, wild beaches and pine dunes of north-east Italy; a fragile environment of shifting boundaries, at once quiet and disquieting. This series imagines a future landscape in which traces of human presence have given way to a rebirth of nature. It was inspired by T.S.Eliot’s poem, 'The Hollow Men' which famously ends with the world's end, "not with a bang but a whimper".
The beach, for me, suggests a portal to our emergence and our disappearance; a liminal space between habitat and wasteland, transience and eternity. It is a journey’s beginning and a journey’s end.
I made these photographs to express a sense of fear for the direction in which we are heading in our relationship with the natural world, but also hope in the knowledge that, come what may, life will flourish again in our absence.
