TITLE: Shadows of the Self
Shadows of the Self is a visual journey into the hidden layers of identity, where light meets shadow, and clarity is blurred by the weight of emotion. This black-and-white series captures intimate moments of self-reflection, where each subject seems to hover between concealment and revelation. The photographs explore the quiet, often unnoticed spaces between who we are and who we present to the world.
Wrapped in soft light and deep shadows, the faces and bodies in this series are not entirely visible, yet their stories resonate clearly. The interplay of light and darkness reflects the struggle to reconcile inner vulnerabilities with outer appearances. These images invite viewers to pause and reflect—not just on the faces before them, but on the shadows within themselves.
Without unnecessary embellishments, the series highlights the raw beauty of human imperfection. Each photograph offers a glimpse of the subject’s emotional landscape, where fear, strength, and acceptance coexist. By leaving parts of the image obscured, Shadows of the Self echoes the idea that we are never fully seen by others, nor do we fully reveal ourselves. The series challenges the viewer to confront what lies beneath the surface, encouraging a deeper connection to the unseen aspects of identity.
In these quiet, introspective moments, the series speaks to the universality of the human experience—where we all navigate our own shadows, finding fragments of truth in the spaces between light and dark.
AUTHOR: Anastasiia Vodchenko (Ukraine)
I began my creative journey over ten years ago when I felt an irresistible desire to express my emotions and vision of the world through photography. Although I do not have formal education in this field, my art has evolved through numerous masterclasses and constant practice.
In my work, I explore themes of human identity, body aesthetics, and emotional authenticity. I am deeply inspired by the work of Peter Lindbergh, and I strive to convey the complexity of human emotions through my photography.
My work has been featured in several exhibitions, including a solo exhibition titled "Women Soft Power" at the Kyiv Museum in 2023. These works also participated in charity auctions in Kyiv, with proceeds going to support humanitarian initiatives related to the war in Ukraine.
With each new project, I continue to deepen my understanding of art and its role in expressing complex human emotions. In the future, I see myself exploring new ways to express the intricate emotions that define the human condition.
