TITLE: Long-necked Karen woman, Thailand

Close to the border with Thailand live small communities of ethnic Karens, who left Myanmar to escape persecution by the authorities. Some of the Karen women traditionally extend their necks by increasing the number of brass rings they wear over time.

Most of the Karen refugees live in desperate poverty. They are not given passports by the Thai authorities and face discrimination in Thailand.
