TITLE: Untitled
These photographs are a continuation of a series I began several years ago and is ongoing. The range of images have evolved from a place of clarity to conceptual in response to questions of identity, purpose, relevance. There is a constant high pitched hum, wavering and waffling in the very existential human quest for meaning. It is a quest that begins as a child, the very day we realize we won’t live forever. That we will die.
Mirrors reflect both internally and externally. They are inseparable. The reflection never changes, only the surroundings.
Putting all the self-pity and esoteric jargon aside, these photographs ask a very simple question: Can you see you?
AUTHOR: Carmella Cardina (United States)
I am a self-taught lens based artist based in Los Angeles.
I received an MFA in Directing from Florida State University. After thirty plus years of working in film and television, I felt it was time for a change.
My studio is in the garage amongst the garden supplies, bicycles, and boxes of random stuff.
I take photos of everything--drill bits, dead animals, partially eaten lamb chops, trees.
I am working on a series (ongoing) of self-portraits as a way of exploring aging—specifically mine.
I photograph what I find interesting and intriguing. I view my entire body of work as a long series in progress. They are all connected even if I’m not certain why or how.
I shoot film and digital. I use my iPhone to shoot the occasional cat photos because who doesn’t.
“I was inventing a language for people to see the everyday things that I see and show them something different.” -Francesca Woodman
