TITLE: Waterfalls
This collection depicts subjects that are simultaneously recognizable yet mysterious. I provide viewers with a partial landscape, leaving space for their imagination to fill in the blanks as they invest time into understanding the picture. Each viewer adds their own subconscious and experiences to complete each artwork, resulting in a blend of reality and personal perception.
AUTHOR: Jonathan Knight (United States)
Jonathan Knight is an internationally acclaimed, self-taught photographic artist originally from Wichita, Kansas. He remains deeply inspired by the expansive landscapes and empty spaces of his childhood. Known for his reductive black-and-white compositions, Knight's photographs have been lauded as "stunningly spare and surreal," revealing intricate and captivating details upon closer viewing.*
Jonathan started taking photos in his teens, but it wasn't until he faced mental and professional burnout, along with being diagnosed with anxiety and depression, that he rediscovered his passion for photography. Driven by a desire to visualize the emotional layers of human experience, Knight turned to long-exposure techniques. He explains, “With my camera, I capture a world that is not static but continuous. We feel it. We sense it. Harnessing emotion and time in one image my work represents a more accurate vision of reality, depicting time itself, where everything felt can be seen all at once.”
Knight's minimalist style fosters a visual dialogue between himself and the viewer. In his most recent Waterfalls collection (2022-) he says, "I capture subjects that are both recognizable yet mysterious. While the basic structure of the image is apparent, much like recalling a memory, it's up to the viewer's imagination to fill in the blanks. Each observer infuses their unique experiences and subconscious into the artwork, resulting in a perception that is part reality and part individual creation.”
Jonathan Knight’s earlier Human/Nature collection (2021-) intertwines humanity's essence with nature's raw beauty, crafting a captivating narrative exploring their intricate relationship. Knight prompts viewers to ponder how human experiences intersect with nature, be it in harmony, conflict, or symbiosis.
Knight's work remains devoid of digital manipulation or orchestration, relying on the natural interplay of light and time, seen prominently in his Dunes (2020-21) collection. This authentic and timeless approach has earned Jonathan over two dozen international awards, including "Photographer of the Year" in a recent international competition. His work is displayed in public and private collections around the world.
