TITLE: The Mundari
The Mundari are a nomadic Nilotic tribe living in South Sudan. They dedicate themselves to grazing their cows with huge horns, called Watusi. Every day in the cattle field there is an almost perfect sequence between nature, cows and men. The men go out to graze the cows in the morning on the banks of the White Nile River, while, generally, the children and women prepare the camp for when the cows return. They clean, order and collect the cow dung from the night before. Piling these up in small pyres around which they will then tie up the cattle on their return.
Before the sun goes down, the cattle return with the men to the camp. They tie up the cows and set fire to the piles of dung collected in the morning. This provides them with warmth and helps keep insects away.
In the morning, early and before the sun rises, the camp wakes up lazy, still warmed by the bonfires. The bonfires are now only ash, and with these ash, it is time now to protect the cattle and the tribe from the sun and mosquitoes. The ash will now turn into a sunscreen.
The hygiene ritual will be carried out with the urine of the cows and for breakfast, a little milk for the men and for the little ones the superfood of cow's blood. An almost perfect ecosystem restarts each day. An ancient way of life and what has remained unchanged for centuries.
