TITLE: Masks
We are roleplayers. On a daily basis we put on masks and adapt to each environment differently. This photo series portrays metaphoric masks, which stand for our daily „role playing“ and how we mask a part of ourselves in different environments. How much do we reveal of ourselves and what stays hidden beneath the masks? The question “Who am I?” has become more and more important and the possibilities to try out or reinvent one’s own identity are limitless.
AUTHOR: Antonia Luebbars (Germany)
I am Antonia Lübbars, a designer born and raised in Germany, with a focus on photography, text and editorial design. I graduated in Communication Design at the HSD in Düsseldorf and learned to balance form and function in order to convey a deeper meaning, that goes beyond aesthetics. For me, Design is an important tool of communication, as it inspires discourse, raises questions and has the power to change perceptions. Design and Photography are platforms of dialogue, that challenge how we see the world around us and engage with all aspects of life. They can be a tool to look at the world with „unusual eyes“. My studies taught me, that control is just as important as losing it. Boundaries were set to move them. I gathered knowledge to sharpen my intuition and experimented with different forms of realization. Bookstores are my personal eden, poetry and music enrich heart and soul. Being driven by curiosity, I like to create something that catches your eye, but sharpens the view and equips aesthetics with dimension.
My studies at the HSD in Düsseldorf taught me not only to organize and develop concepts, but to build narratives with the right dose of form and content. I gathered experience and knowledge to sharpen my intuition and experimented with different forms of implementation to communicate content in various, multilayered ways. Internships in the print sector and graphic design helped me to strengthen my skills in developing holistic projects.
Before a project develops, the subject must touch me on a personal and emotional level, trigger a spark of thirst for knowledge that makes my fingertips tingle. The dimensions of my projects are socially critical, while others pursue a more personal approach. In order to develop an idea, extensive research is essential to me in order to get an overview of the topic. The research part gives me the freedom to grow an idea.
