AUTHOR: Ryan Garry (United States)
Growing up, Ryan's father was a family photographer so from a young age, he admired him as he carried his camera everywhere. His own interest in photography, however, sparked in 2014 when he took his dad's camera with him on a school choir trip. He instantly fell in love with capturing the world around him and the opportunity to tell stories from behind the lens. It was not only a way for him to connect with his dad, but also a new way for him to let his creativity shine through. He hasn't put the camera down since. His work is not limited to photographs but also videography and documentary filming. He filmed the 2021 documentary High Low, was a featured artist in the 1617 Project on Hulu, curates and documents the Mash-up, a Jackson, MS creative collective project and has managed to produce and film a host of other music videos in many states around the country. Between his admiration for his father and grandfather and their work ethic with following their creative pursuits; Ryan feels as if he were destined to find this work…or more so destined for this work to find him. He connects with his community from behind the camera and uses his gift to engage with and display their beauty. In 2019 his work was published in a local magazine called 7Hues. Ryan lives and works in Jackson, Mississippi traveling across the country in his practice.
