TITLE: Dustbunny

This collection of photographs is a small look into the queer community that used to frequent Philadelphia's Dustbunny techno castle before it shut down sometime after covid. These photographs now act as a memory of where I used to seek comfort and freedom when I couldn't always find it in my day-to-day life. Because these photographs exist on B&W film, they stand as a sort of time capsule for my artist's development and memories because of their tangibility and how they represent the past. They embody a feeling of spontaneity because all of the photos were shot on a point and shoot with an on-camera flash. This sort of rawness is something I will choose never to forget or let go of. It's something I artistically seek often.

Philadelphia based artist, Nyah Thompson, is currently attending the University of the Arts to earn her BFA in Photography while minoring in illustration. Inspired by her experiences with underground club culture and the individuality that she witnesses throughout those settings, her portraits center around queer folk who’ve found freedom and comfort within the alike bodies and accepting space that surrounds them. Her goals as of right now are to further develop her style and explore integrating her illustrations with her photography. Much of her inspiration for her fashion illustrations is drawn from her portraiture work surrounding the DIY nightlife scene she frequents and the experimental fashion that comes with it, and she strives to highlight the importance of representation of queer BIPOC bodies by capturing and celebrating their individual forms as they thrive in these comfortable places. Nyah’s photography as a whole embodies elements of queer expression through fashion and art.
