TITLE: 2 + 2 = 5
“I am not a cat, I am the Big Brother!” Big Brother is a fictional character in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. Also, 2 + 2 = 5 is a dogmatic statement of Ingsoc philosophy, used in the same novel. Orwell took inspiration from a real event in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. In 1931, Yakov Guminer made a propaganda poster, meaning "The arithmetic of an industrial-financial counter-plan: 2 + 2 plus the enthusiasm of the workers = 5". Joseph Stalin proclaimed that the plan could be achieved in four years instead of five, but the targets were simply unrealistic. The first five-year plan of the Soviet Union started in 1928 and finished in 1932. The first five-year plan of Romania began in 1951 and the last one stopped in 1989. I was born in Romania, so I lived under the dystopian terror that George Orwell described in “1984.” Our Communist Party has always tried to manipulate the truth. "Two plus two equals five” is the symbol of the lies that the Communist Party presented his truth to be accepted. “I am not a cat, I can hear, see and smell your fear, because I am EVERYWHERE!”
