TITLE: The Old City
Stone Town, capital of Zanzibar, is a unique mixture of Arab, Persian, Indian and European elements. For this reason, the town was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The old part of the main city in Zanzibar, is as old as the first told stories of the island. It is a magic place to get lost in – lost in direction, and at the same time in a fantasy of intriguing past. Sadly, as by today, there are no private, governmental or international funds for its maintenance, preservation or sustainable development, leading the inhabitants in Stone Town to enormous trouble regarding education, sustainable living, economy and town planning.
