TITLE: THE OUTDATED EMPIRE
The series of 8 pictures with which I participate in the Monovisions Photography Awards is the result of a work I made during a three-month road trip in the United States, from April to June 2018. This work is called “The Outdated Empire”. I wanted to tell about the obsolescence of the middle east states that we crossed with two friends.
Everything I saw reflected back the last century under worn and worm-eaten suns. The infinite space, the spectacular emptiness of dead cities, the disappearance of frenzies. Like entering a world of oblivion.
I wanted to give an account of my perception by playing with the reflections in the windows. Photographing the cities that we were going through didn't make sense to me, because how to photograph the void? the lack? the obsolescence? And the world turned upside down with the superposition of things in the reflections finally made sense to me, something emerged that I could assemble and undo as I wanted depending on how I moved around that reflection with my camera. I told my own version of things, I could let my feelings run free and I was able to become an actress of what I received visually, and appropriate what I was going through.
AUTHOR: Juliette Avice (France)
I am 28 years old and i Live in Paris, France.
After studying literature and theatre between Lille and Paris in France, I became a professional photographer in 2016.
My work deals with the notions of memory, intimacy and relationship to time in society.
For the past two years I have been leading a photographic report on my grandparents and the weight of the family heritage. In 2017 I exhibit in Lille a photographic work "Beyond this limit..." made in Germany and Denmark in black and white film. During a three-month trip to the United States in 2018, I worked on a series "The Outdated Empire" whose theme is the obsolescence of the middle east states. In March 2019 I started a long term photographic work on the ritual of awakening. I want to interfere in the morning lives of people of different ages, sexes and social backgrounds and tell about the torpor, habits, obsessions, contemplative thoughts and everything that populates the mornings of those whose paths I will cross.
I also made a journalism school in France during winter 2018 and I just started to work for differents medias as a photojournalist.
Beyond my work as a photographer I also work as an actress. These two environments allow me to access through different means the world I desire within myself.
