TITLE: Brooklyn's Beaches - The Off-Season
Every summer, millions of New Yorkers stuff themselves into subway cars bound for Brooklyn’s beaches. But when winter comes and the tourist attractions close, the mostly Russian, Jewish and elderly residents of Brighten Beach and Coney Island can finally reclaim their deserted neighborhoods. Undaunted by the cold and wind, they spend afternoons sunbathing and strolling along the frigid boardwalk, shopping at Russian food carts under the elevated subway tracks, and playing dominos behind a protective sheet of vinyl streaked with sea salt. Eventually, spring’s arrival beckons the crowds and the cycle begins again.
