TITLE: BETWEEN EAST AND WEST
In recent years the we seem interested in building barriers way more than in breaking them. To an alarming number of westerners the eastern countries seem like a world apart, inhabited by a different species. And vice versa. We desperately need more empathy. And that’s achieved by the sum of each and every individual attitude. Meaning that even small personal experiments counts. For me, traveling is a tool for gathering insight into different perspectives. My trip to Morocco was all about that. Geographically, it’s the most westerly country in the Mediterranean. But at the same time it lives according to the religious and social laws of many other Arab societies to the east. A reminder that the distance separating these realities isn’t a fact but a choice. So as an street photographer, I went there searching for glimpses into the lives of others. Finding mutual interest in return. Most of the time, I felt observed as much of an observer. With every moment seeming to bring us closer, despite the gap between our worlds. This is what’s captured in the photographs. It was just a short trip, though. But small steps can be really important.
