This is a picture I shot for Red Cross Visiting Service Vestfold, at a nursing home in Nøtterøy in Norway in 2017.
The visiting service is the largest care activity in the Red Cross in Norway. It was started in 1949 under the direction of Jens Meinich. His famous parole was "The best medicine for a human being is another human being." This is still the foundation of the Red Cross Visiting Service. Throughout Norway, Red Cross volunteer visits take place in private homes and institutions.
Humanitarian Challenges -
Many people have trouble having meaningful social relationships. The consequences can be loneliness and isolation, and loss of health and well-being. Being recognized by others as a valuable fellow human is a deeply inherent need for us. The absence of this deprives not only of security and proximity but also of faith in ourselves and the strength to handle our lives.
