TITLE: Ulak Kupkari
I was the only woman at this event held in a field a few hours outside of Samarqand, Uzbekistan. Ulak Kupkari is a traditional game in this country and hundreds of men compete on horseback for a goat carcass. They then have to keep their opponents from taking the carcass and must bring it to the end of the field pinned by their leg where they then get a prize. On a rainy/snowy day like this, the carcass supposedly weighed up to 80 kg. These men were competing to win some live goats that were with me in the dump truck that I scaled to take photos.

I shoot photographs because I believe art is the most important medium for exchanging dialogue and creating change. I am a former social worker and am passionate about human rights, environmental issues and the empowerment of women and marginalized communities. I believe in using my camera as grassroots tools to both honor hope and fight oppression in a nonviolent manner.
