TITLE: Più / Echo
Text by Martina Ghignatti and Francesca Calzà.
Occupying, inhabiting space belongs to human nature, identifying with the land inhabited represents
a part of the process that builds an identity connected to the land. To belong means to take part in
drawing everyday life that unfolds through the relationship of reciprocity with the surrounding
environment, thus shaping one's uniqueness. The land assumes an identity
value for its inhabitants who are intrinsically connected. The event of a natural tragedy, such as an
earthquake, causes the disruption of this symbiotic and illusorily eternal relationship.
In times of loss, the cracks in a territory almost invisible to the eyes are newly disclosed: homes and
their foundations reveal their own scars, the same scars that mark the faces of those who have
witnessed their destruction. The series Più / Echo merges the character of Grandma Lena - the
artist's grandmother - with the land, once considered home and now a place of uncertainty because
of the great earthquake of 2009 that stole it all away. These are pictures of the land of Abruzzo, a
region she loved and felt betrayed by.
The landscape previously ignored, and now fearfully examined, becomes a silent witness to the
precariousness of human existence, thus emphasizing the interdependence with the natural
element. The project intends to investigate the living environment by crossing the boundary between
nature and artifice to embrace a personal relationship with the place of origin that goes beyond the
limits of domestic walls to embark on a journey about identity. Every shake, every crack, every
wrinkle, become a visual backdrop whose symbols reveal stories everyone can identify with. Più /
Echo is the sound, the evolving landscape that claims its existence in the present, past
and future while navigating between desolation and rebirth.
