TITLE: 0 1
The photography series 0│1 draws inspiration from influenced by the Finnish folk proverb— 'Jumalan selän takana' (behind God's back), which speaks of remote and desolate places. In my work, I aim to capture the essence of these landscapes, depicting roadside grass and harsh snowy scenes with ample white space and minimalist lines to convey a profound sense of desolation.
As I delve into the photographs of 0│1, I find myself alluding to the absence of an eternal and unchanging entity within this realm. Through the stark blankness presented by snow, they express feelings of void, stillness, impermanence, and disembodiment, almost as if everything is being reset to zero, suggesting the presence of imperceptible forces that shape our existence.
In certain pieces, I emphasize the intersection between plant roots and the snowy ground. This symbolism signifies the interdependence and interconnectedness of all things in life. Within the intricate forms of plants lie mathematical laws governing the universe and its natural cycles, hidden yet profoundly influential.
The superposition state of quantum mechanics serves as a metaphor in my work, transcending binary oppositions and expressing the coexistence of 0 and 1. This concept mirrors the cyclical nature of life, where elements continuously cycle through existence. Moreover, this state embodies the vastness of the universe and its concealed mechanisms, challenging our understanding and perception of reality.
AUTHOR: Kai-Yen Tu (Taiwan)
Kaiyen Tu(1986-) is a Taiwanese photographic artist specializing in capturing mental imagery based on black-and-white descriptions of the natural world.
For her, photography is not just an art form but also a spiritual journey connected to the subconscious. Influenced deeply by minimalism and conceptualism, her photography style expresses subtle yet profound connections with nature through existentialism. This combination results in concise and abstract works, exploring and expressing philosophical dimensions through symbolic imagery. Her works are often intricate and metaphorical, using black-and-white photography as a language of detachment to create a visual distance from color, aiming to bring about an internal objectivity and clarity within photography.
