Tough, strong and defiant in daylight at Turon National Park, NSW, these trees are truly twisted when night falls. Some even appear to be bending away from the light, seeking the solace of the shadows. But beware…they’re not going anywhere…they’ll always be there, lurking in the darkness…

Australia is a landscape unique in its savagery and spectacle. As a boy born and raised in industrial Manchester, UK, this contrast was never more apparent than when I first arrived in Perth many moons ago; that first experience saw me basking in the stunning vistas of the Nambung National Park whilst using a big stick to fend off large, deadly brown snakes. I was the art director on an advertising photography shoot – keeping one eye on the back of the camera, the other firmly on the red dirt around the tripod.

That juxtaposition, the incredibly beautiful combined with the incredibly scary, has fascinated me ever since and I strive to capture images that live up to this brutal beauty. Thanks to many years working with some of the world’s best commercial photographers, each time I venture into the Australian bush with my camera and single 24mm lens, I discover something new every time.

I have lived in Sydney, Australia for more than twenty years now and the brutal beauty of this land never fails to fill me with awe. And a little terror.

These journeys have led me to stunning ranges and tropical rainforests; to epic sand dunes and snow blizzards on a mountain top. And they never look as dramatic as when captured in black and white.

There have been times when I have thought twice about taking a certain path, but I am always glad I ventured down it.

On many occasions, it’s been the path itself that has revealed the true reason I was there...
